Benson honored for academics

Athletics - posted on 11/3/2009

Lakeland sophomore Adam Benson was named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-District V men's soccer second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced late last week.

Benson, a midfielder, is majoring in business management and marketing with a minor in economics. He carries a 3.86 cumulative grade point average.

The Anoka, Minn., native was an integral part of Lakeland's run to the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament this season. Benson finished with three goals and a team-high five assists, starting all 19 matches for the Muskies. The team finished 8-10-1 overall with a 6-5 mark in league play.

"Adam has a lot of energy about him in what he does," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "He carries himself with pride and leads from the front and by example. I'm not surprised by this because his work rate on the field is similar to what he does off the field."

Benson is also involved in Lakeland's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE).

A total of eight NAC student-athletes were named to College Division District V teams, including three men's soccer players. The College Division is made up of NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA institutions and two-year colleges.

To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must carry a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA and appear in at least 50 percent of their teams' contests.
