Muskies fall behind early in lopsided loss at Concordia Chicago

The Lakeland College football team could not contain Concordia University Chicago's explosive offense in a 48-7 road loss on Saturday.

Lakeland falls to 2-5 overall, 1-3 in Northern Athletics Conference play, three games behind league leader Benedictine. NAC preseason favorite CUC improves to 5-2, 3-1 in the NAC.

Concordia took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass following a poor Lakeland punt. Fifteen second later, the Cougars added to their lead, with a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown. After a third score in the first quarter, Lakeland finally answered with an eight play, 63-yard drive capped by a Justin Laack 19-yard TD run early in the second quarter.

That would be all the offense Lakeland could muster and the defense couldn't shut down Concordia. Following a scoreless second quarter, CUC would score a rushing and receiving touchdown in each of the last two quarters, including 39-yard and 95-yard touchdown runs by senior running back Khyree Copeland.

Defensively, the Muskies struggled to keep the Cougars in check as Concordia totaled 572 yards of offense, 177 passing and 395 rushing. Copeland, the school's all-time leading rusher, had 333 rushing yards on 28 carries. Lakeland did manage three interceptions, but the offense couldn't capitalize.

Lakeland's offensive struggles continued Saturday as they totaled just 157 yards, 128 passing and just 29 rushing. Senior QB Jake Dworak continued to struggle completing 12 of 31 passes for 121 yards and three interceptions. Senior wide receiver Roberto Flores led the Muskies with six receptions for 57 yards and junior running back Jeremy Williams led the team with 29 yards on 14 carries.

Lakeland returns home to host NAC leader Benedictine on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m.
