Chepil, Muskies close Florida trip with win

Athletics - posted on 3/20/2010

Senior pitcher Lee Chepil's second complete-game performance of the season helped the Lakeland baseball team close its spring break trip with a 5-1 victory over Bethel (Minn.) on Saturday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Chepil, a right-hander from Ladysmith, Wis., scattered seven hits and four walks while striking out five to move to 2-0 on the year.

With the win, the Muskies (6-4) finished above .500 on the Florida swing after posting a 3-7 mark at the same tournament last season. The last time Lakeland concluded a trip to Florida with at least a .500 record was 2003, when the team went 5-5.

Clinging to a 2-0 advantage, the Muskies erupted for three runs in the top of the seventh inning, spurred by a pair of walks and run-scoring outs by sophomore Stephen Kalina (Lake Villa, Ill.) and freshman Cody Riemer (Marion, Wis.).

Bethel (9-6) left 10 men on base during the game and was unable to string together hits against Chepil.

Junior Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) led the Muskies with two RBIs, while senior Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton, Wis.) scored twice and stole a base.

Lakeland returns to the field on Wednesday, March 31, for a doubleheader at Lawrence. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
