SHEBOYGAN - The No. 9 Lakeland men's volleyball team came up just short of a Midwest 10 championship, falling 25-21, 25-23 in the final to No. 4 UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, March 6, at the Wehr Center Field House.
The Muskies (21-5 overall, 7-2 Wisconsin Volleyball Conference) have now dropped four of five matches this season against the Titans, who also defeated the Muskies on Feb. 28 at the Hoosier-Illini Classic.
Lakeland's lone win over UW-Oshkosh came at the first Midwest 10 Playdate back on Feb. 6. The Muskies won 25-20, 22-25, 18-16 on that day to give coach Chad Schreiber his 600th career win.
The Muskies defeated Ball State (25-15, 25-12) in the quarterfinals and No. 20 Marquette (25-23, 25-15) in the semifinals to set up the showdown against Oshkosh. Lakeland has yet to lose to Marquette in four matches this season.
Prior to bracket play, the Muskies rolled to consecutive victories over Ball State (25-8, 25-17) and Notre Dame (25-18, 25-16).
Outside hitter Joe Julkowski (Carol Stream, Ill.) paced the Lakeland offense with 40 kills on the day. Freshman outside hitter Dane Maier (Middleton, Wis.) added 24 kills, while sophomore setter Mitch Wiskirchen (Schaumburg, Ill.) tallied 102 assists.
Sophomore libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with 33 digs, and middle hitter Avdo Omerbegovic (Chicago, Ill.) totaled team highs with seven blocks and seven service aces.
Lakeland hosts No. 22 UW-Whitewater on Tuesday, March 9, at 8 p.m. in the team's final home match of the 2010 season.
