Muskies swept at Concordia, Wis.
Athletics - posted on 4/27/2010
The Lakeland baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion in a pair of games at Concordia, Wis., 4-3 (10 innings) and 5-2, in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at Regner Park in West Bend, Wis.
The Muskies received fantastic pitching efforts from starters Lee Chepil (Ladysmith, Wis.) and Matt Katzman (Prairie du Sac, Wis.), but it wasn't enough as Lakeland led in both contests but was unable to hang on.
"We were a play away in both games from being on the left-hand side of the outcome," Lakeland coach Chris Thousand said.
In Game 1, the Muskies (15-15 overall, 6-8 NAC) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth and had two outs in the ninth before the Falcons scored on a ground ball hit off the end of the bat, which took an unusual hop past first baseman Cal Post (Appleton, Wis.).
Concordia scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
"Lee pitched great and we had some clutch hitting against their ace in the game," Thousand said. "It was a crazy play that kept us from getting out of the ninth."
In the eighth, Lakeland turned a 2-0 deficit into a one-run lead thanks to a Concordia error and two-out, run-scoring singles by junior Brad Young (West Bend, Wis.) and senior Doug Novak (Algoma, Wis.).
Chepil scattered 11 hits over nine innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out eight. Sophomore reliever Erik Kozey (0-1) took the loss.
Five players recorded two hits each for the Muskies.
Lakeland held a 2-1 advantage in the second game heading into the bottom of the seventh, when the Falcons (17-10, 11-3) erupted for four runs to take the lead for good.
"Katzman pitched well," Thousand said. "Concordia's pitcher kept us off-balance for most of the game."
Young and Novak posted one RBI apiece, while Post tallied two of the Muskies' five hits, a run scored and a stolen base.
Katzman (3-2) worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Junior Jeremy Williams (Zion, Ill.) didn't allow an earned run in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Lakeland returns to action tomorrow to continue a doubleheader suspended last Saturday against Wisconsin Lutheran. Game 1 of the twin bill will resume at 4 p.m. at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan with the Muskies leading the Warriors 11-2 entering the top of the sixth inning.
The second game will begin approximately 25-30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
