Muskies win two at rival Marian

The Lakeland baseball team won its fifth and sixth straight games and clinched a 20-win season with a 12-6, 11-8 sweep at Marian on Monday night in Northern Athletics Conference action at Fond du Lac, Wis.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Muskies (21-15 overall, 12-8 NAC) clinched the program's first season with more than 20 wins since 2005. Lakeland will also finish no worse than .500 in NAC competition.

The Muskies recorded 36 hits combined in the twin bill and received a couple of noteworthy pitching performances in the two contests.

In Game 2, Lakeland recovered from an early 4-0 deficit to to take a 9-6 advantage through five innings.

After the Sabres (11-25, 7-13) closed the gap to 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore relief pitcher Erik Kozey (Medford, Wis.) shut out Marian in the last three innings to pick up his second save of the year. The Muskies tacked on a pair of key insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to help Kozey out.

Lakeland took a 7-5 lead after a four-run fourth inning, which was keyed by run-scoring hits from junior Cal Post (Appleton, Wis.), senior Doug Novak (Algoma, Wis.) and sophomore Stephen Kalina (Lake Villa, Ill.).

Kalina finished with a team-high four hits, including two doubles. Novak and Post combined for five hits, four runs scored and four RBIs, while freshman Cody Riemer (Marion, Wis.) enjoyed a breakout game with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.

Junior pitcher Matt Katzman (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) moved to 4-2 on the season, departing with the lead after six innings of work.

In the first game, senior pitcher Lee Chepil (Ladysmith, Wis.) continued his stellar 2010 campaign. The starting right-hander pitched eight innings, scattering eight hits while allowing just one earned run and striking out seven. Chepil is now 5-2 for the season.

Marian rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too late as the Muskies recorded nine extra-base hits and four runs each in the fourth and ninth frames.

Novak totaled three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, and hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth. All nine players in the Lakeland batting order posted at least one hit while eight of the starting nine scored at least one run.

Junior Jeremy Meier (Sauk City, Wis.) also finished with three hits for the Muskies.

Lakeland wraps up the home portion of its schedule this Wednesday, May 5, at 1 p.m. against Carthage. The contest marks the final game on campus for Chepil, Novak and fellow senior Jacob Heinemeyer (Shiocton, Wis.).
