Senior guard Chelsea Coenen scored a season-high 20 points and added seven rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Lakeland College women's basketball team fell to Rockford College 62-58, Saturday afternoon.
Lakeland (5-8, 2-5 NAC) struggled early in the first half, trailing by as many as seven points, but used a 7-0 run to take a six-point, 33-27 lead, into the half. Unfortunately the Muskies couldn't hold the lead. Lakeland led for most of the second half, but a lack of defense in the games' final minutes cost the Muskies.
The Regents shot 52 percent from the field and shot 75 percent (3-4) from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile, the Muskies continued to shoot poorly as they shot 34 percent from the field and 31 percent (4-13) from behind the arc. The biggest difference came at the free throw line, where Rockford shot 73 percent (11-15) while Lakeland shot a miserable 47 percent (8-17).
Head coach Teri Johnson was not happy with the teams' defense or their execution at the line.
"We gave up too many easy layups and didn't take advantage of our opportunities at the line," said Johnson. "We will continue to focus on our team. We have to pay attention to detail and continue to work hard to make the adjustments."
Lakeland returns to action Thursday, Jan. 13, when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to face Northern Athletics Conference north division foe, Edgewood College. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
