Muskies suffer third straight NAC loss

Athletics - posted on 2/8/2011

Junior Becca Paulson (Clayton, Wis.) scored a season-high 17 points, but the Lakeland College women's basketball team came up short in a 61-71 Northern Athletics Conference North Division loss to Concordia University, Wisconsin, Thursday night in Mequon, Wis.

It was an up and down battle in the first half for the Muskies (8-11, 5-8 NAC) and the first place Falcons as the score was tied ten times in the first half. Lakeland held a seven point, 33-26, lead with 2:44 to go in the first half, but a 8-0 run by the Falcons gave Concordia, Wis., a 34-33 lead at the break.

The opening minutes of the second half was much like the first, with two more ties, for a total of 12 in the game. However, at the 14:00 mark, with the game tied at 41, the Falcons went on a 14-3 run, to take a 55-44 lead with 9:44 left. The Muskies tried to fight back, but just didn't have an answer.

The Muskies scored 17 second chance points and 20 bench points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the sharp-shooting Falcons.

Junior Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) had 13 points, two rebounds, and three steals, while sophomore Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) added 10 points. Paulson led the team with seven rebounds.

For the game Lakeland shot 35.4 percent (23-65) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-12) from behind the arc and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the charity stripe. The Falcons shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the field, 50 percent (4-8) from 3-point range and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line.

Lakeland returns to NAC action on Thursday, Feb. 10, as they return to Woltzen Gymnasium to host NAC foe Maranatha Baptist. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
