Three grapplers place at Pointer Open

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Lakeland College wrestling team had three place winners in the UW-Stevens Point Pointer open Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Renon, a sophomore from Wrightstown, Wis., wrestled at 165 and took fourth place after facing tough Division I competition. Renon lost two matches on the day to third-place winner Frank Cousins, Jr. of Wisconsin. Cousins pinned Renon in 3:52 in the third place match. Renon captured an 18-4 major decision over Alex VanKrevelen of Rochester Community College. He ended the day 4-2, including an impressive 6-3 decision over Alex Yde of Wisconsin.

Chris Weber, a sophomore from Mishicot, Wis., took sixth place at 184. Weber collected a 6-3 decision over Jack Steinberg of Luther College before falling in the semi-finals to eventual champion Ben Engellend of UW-Stevens Point. Weber will face Engellend again on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Wehr Center Field House.

Rob Frias, a junior from Oak Lawn, Ill., took sixth place at 141. Frias had a first round bye before falling 18-2 to Alex Dahl of No. 3 UW-La Crosse. Frias recorded a 5-0 decision over Lucas McGann of UW-Stevens Point before falling 3-2 to Shane Sweeney of UW-Stevens Point.

Sophomore Brandon Garcia (Adell, Wis.) had an impressive showing at 157 going 2-1, but forfeited his final match due to an injury.

Junior Rob Forgette (Menominee, Mich.) went 2-2 at 194 and pinned Brandon Calhoun in 1:45. He also had a 9-4 decision over Derek Jazdzewski of UW-Parkside.

Freshman Zach Wetzel (Campbellsport, Wis.) had two byes and recorded a pin over Micah Ballow from Luther College in 2:52. Wetzel lost 12-10 to Cully Butterfield, the eventual fifth place winner.

Also securing decisions for Lakeland were sophomore Joel Frias (Oak Lawn, Ill.) who had a 2-1 decision over Justin Roth, freshman Max Loberger (Maribel, Wis.) who had a 10-0 major decision over Tyler Furger of UW-La Crosse. Junior Miguel Luis pinned Clayton Newmiller in 29 seconds before dropping a 6-2 decision to Ryan Conat and being pinned by Blake Menard.

The Muskies return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 17, in a home dual against UW-Stevens Point. The match is set for 7 p.m.
