Lakeland battles Titans, loses first game in Muskie Classic

The Lakeland women's volleyball team lost its home and season opener 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-14) to No. 6 UW-Oshkosh Friday night in the second annual Muskie Classic.

The Muskies (0-1) fought hard in each set but couldn't overcome the nationally-recognized Titans. Head coach Chad Schreiber was impressed with his team's effort and thought they held their own against Oshkosh.

"I was impressed with how well we played tonight. We shouldn't be this good yet and I am very pleased with our effort," said Schreiber.

Junior middle hitter Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) led the Muskies with eight kills and was a dominant presence in the Muskie attack.

In her first appearance as a Muskie, freshmen outside hitter Katie Freitag (Kiel, Wis.) led the team in digs with 13. Senior captain Kristine Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) followed with 12 digs.

'"I only asked the girls to stay focused and play with the energy it takes to win a match. I'm not disappointed, we played with great energy, but Oshkosh is a team we can't afford to make mistakes against," said Schreiber.

Lakeland faces UW-River Falls at 10 a.m. and faces Millikin University at 12 p.m. in the last game of the Muskie Classic.
