Senior Trevor McKown had 16 points and six rebounds to lead the Lakeland College men's basketball team to a 74-71 victory over Lake Forest College Thursday night in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies led by as many as 20 points early second half, but saw that lead dwindle as Lake Forest went on a couple of runs to make it a two-point game with 3:05 left. Lakeland stayed fundamentally strong and composed down the stretch to move to 2-0 on the young season.
Junior Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) sank a free throw to put the Muskies up by three with 8.2 seconds left. The Foresters' 3-point attempt fell short as Lakeland grabbed a rebound to secure the win.
Freshman Tal Diekvoss (Beaver Dam, Wis.) and McKown (Hot Springs, S.D.) combined for 29 points off the bench. Diekvoss and McKown were both perfect from the charity stripe. McKown went 7-11 from the field, while Diekvoss nailed some clutch shots from behind the 3-point arc.
The Foresters' Travis Clark recorded a double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
In his first start as a Muskie, freshman Stan McKenzie (Racine, Wis.) scored 14 points while adding eight rebounds.
