Lakeland drops first road game

The Lakeland College men's basketball team suffered a 68-67 overtime setback to Concordia University Chicago in its first Northern Athletics Conference road game Tuesday night in River Forest, Ill.

Junior guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) sent the game into overtime after sinking a 3-point shot with nine seconds left in the second half. The Muskies went up by as much as five points in overtime, but couldn't keep the lead. Regal ended the night with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.

The Muskies (2-1 overall, 0-1 NAC) turned the ball over 18 times and surrendered 15 offensive rebounds, which led to second-chance points by the Cougars.

Transfer junior guard Bobby Komorowski (Germantown, Wis.) led Lakeland in scoring with a game-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds. Komorowski hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in overtime to give the Muskies a one-point advantage. A string of Lakeland fouls and missed shots, however allowed the Cougars' Deontay Young to sink two free throws in the final seconds for the victory.

Concordia Chicago's Jeff Weberg led the Cougars with 23 points to go along with five rebounds.

Despite the loss, head coach Aaron Aanonsen was pleased with the team's overall efforts, but disappointed with the Cougars second-chance scoring opportunities.

"We came out strong in the first half," said Aannonsen. "Offensively and defensively we did some good things, but we weren't able to capitalize on their mistakes. We had too many turnovers and shot poorly from the free throw line. We can't do that on the road against the conference's No. 1 team and expect to win."

Lakeland held the Cougars to 16.7 percent from behind the 3-point arc and 41.4 percent from the field, while the Cougars only shot 53.3 percent from the charity stripe.

Freshman Stan McKenzie (Racine, Wis.) recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Lakeland returns to NAC action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, in a home match against Maranatha Baptist. Tip-off is 7 p.m. in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
