The Lakeland College volleyball team won two of its four matches at the Ripon College tournament this past weekend. The Muskies are now 3-10 as they head into a seven-game stretch against Northern Athletics Conference opponents.
Friday, the Muskies went 1-1, winning their first match against Maranatha Baptist, 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19), and losing their second to UW-River Falls, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-22). Saturday, the Muskies went 1-1 as well, losing their first match to UW-Stevens Point, 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-21), and winning their second over Ripon, 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21).
Although the Muskies played well, they felt short of their goal of a 4-0 weekend. Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber was hoping for better results and improved play.
"We could've gone 4-0, which was our goal," said Schreiber. "We were close with UW-Stevens Point and UW-River Falls the first time we played them (this season), and I thought we could beat them. We just missed opportunities in both matches. Even in our wins, we failed to put together complete matches. We beat Ripon with determination that we have not seen before. It was nice to put together enough of a match to beat a quality opponent in Ripon. I would like to see us keep up the energy and continue to win more than we have."
For the tournament, the Muskies averaged 11.67 Kills, 10.67 assists, and 1.6 serving aces. Junior middle Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) led the way with 46 kills (3.07/game) on a .242 kill percentage. Senior Kristine Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and fellow freshman setter Brittany Reindl (Kenosha, Wis.) led the team with a combined 143 assists, 4.8 per game. Raeder also led the team with six serving aces.
Defensively, the Muskies averaged 17.8 digs and 1.83 blocks per game. Again Davis was the leader for the Muskies with 15 total blocks, averaging one per game. Junior libero Amanda Laganowski (Oostburg, Wis.) led Lakeland with 54 digs, averaging 3.60 per game.
Davis was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.
"We played better this weekend, we just weren't able to sustain the effort," Schreiber said. "Even in our wins we let up in one set each game. We are getting there, but we aren't where we need to be yet."
The Muskies look to put it all together when they travel to Madison, Wis., to play Edgewood College on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 7:00 pm.
