Muskies improve to 3-1 after day 1

The Lakeland men's volleyball team finished 2-1 Saturday as host of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Playdate at the Wehr Center Field House.
The Muskies (3-1 overall, 3-1 WVC) knocked off UW-Stout (25-21, 25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 15-8) and UW-Stevens Point (25-15, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23) before a setback against UW-La Crosse (22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25).
Against Stout, sophomore outside hitter Dane Maier (Middleton, Wis.) led the Muskie offense with 25 kills. Freshman opposite Brett Kaczmarek (Kenosha, Wis.) tallied 15 kills and freshman middle hitter Ralph Kokoszka (Palos Heights, Ill.) had seven blocks. Senior setter Chris Kubacki (Vernon Hills, Ill.) finished with 55 assists.
Defensively, Lakeland was led by junior libero Andrew Cheever (Milwaukee, Wis.), who had 19 digs.
"Stout is a much improved team that plays some incredible defense," said Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber. "We overcame some mid-match serving mistakes to pull out the win. Jumping out to an early lead in the 5th was critical."
In the Stevens Point match, Maier registered 13 kills, while junior middle hitter Jared Sparrey (Oak Forest, Ill.) recorded 11 kills and seven blocks. Kubacki finished with 38 assists.
Cheever led the back row with 25 digs.
"After playing a really clean first game, we experimented with some different line-up combinations," said Schreiber. "We need to be able to play with some other combinations and improve our depth if we are going to play at a level we're used to."
In the loss to La Crosse, Maier again led the Muskies with 22 kills, while Sparrey added 12 kills and six blocks. Kubacki recorded 42 assists.
Cheever continued his solid defensive play with 19 digs.
"The finish to the first 2 games set the tone for a disappointing finish," said Schreiber. "Tied at 20-20 in Game 1 we couldn't put a serve in play the next 2 times back. Game 2 saw us blow a 23-19 lead because of some poor offensive decisions. After that we were in a great rhythm in Game 3 but couldn't sustain it to extend the match."
The Muskies return to action Sunday, Jan. 30, as they host day two of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Playdate at the Wehr Center Field House. Lakeland faces UW-Platteville at noon.
