Muskies open season 0-2

The Lakeland College football team opened the season 0-2 after a 38-0 loss at Carthage College in Kenosha on Saturday night. The Muskies were shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since 2008.

The offense struggled for the second straight outing, as they amassed just 97 total yards, 45 rushing, and just eight first downs. Lakeland faced a 31-0 deficit by halftime

Lakeland was plagued by turnovers all night, with three interceptions and a fumble producing 21 points for Carthage.

"We were moving the ball, but the turnovers cost us," said Lakeland head coach Kevin Doherty. "The interception for a touchdown really hurt. The defense makes a play and you give it right back. It took the wind out of our sails. The defense played well, but we didn't put them in a good position to succeed."

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Van Straten (Shiocton, Wis.) struggled to find his rhythm, completing six of 19 passes for 51 yards and three interceptions. Freshman Tarrel Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) led the Muskies in rushing with 42 yards on 11 carries.

The defense did all it could to keep Lakeland in the game, allowing 293 total yards, 190 rushing, and just 13 first downs. They also had two interceptions and allowed just seven points in the second half.

Senior safety Tony Faller (Oostburg, Wis.) led the Muskies in tackles with nine, including two for a loss. Juniors Bruce Romagnoli (Iron Mountain, Mich.) and Evan Dieringer (Germantown, Wis.) each had an interception and a tackle for a loss.

After a bye week, the Muskies will look to get their first win in their home opener on Sept. 24 against Hope College.

"Right now we need to take these two weeks to heal, watch film, and continue to get better," said Doherty. "It'll be nice to get home and play in front of our fans. It'd be nice to give them a win."
