Senior Ben Koepsell scored in the 82nd minute to give the Lakeland College men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Martin Luther College in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at Muskie Field.

The Muskies (1-0) got off to a dominating start as they controlled the ball most of the first half. Lakeland peppered the Knights' goal, outshooting Martin Luther 14-3 in the first half of play, 28- 9 for the game.

Senior forward Jeremy Hardy (Cooks, Mich.) was first to score for Lakeland, netting a goal in the 50th minute on through ball from senior midfielder Adam Benson (Anoka, Minn.). The Knights wouldn't go unnoticed, answering the Muskies in the 63rd minute.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Koepsell (Cedar Grove, Wis.) capitalized on a loose ball on top of the six yard box to give the team the go-ahead goal.

Head coach Tony Pierce was pleased with the team's play and anticipation.

"I think it's huge for us to start 1-0, especially after the season we had last year," said Pierce. "It's great to start off with a win and I thought we played well. The leadership of our seniors was great. We came out and took control of the game which is what we need to do every game."

Junior goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Menasha, Wis.) recorded nine saves.
