Lakeland falls in heartbreaker

Athletics - posted on 9/3/2011

The Lakeland College women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to Martin Luther College in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at Muskie Field.

After trailing 2-0 at half, the Muskies (0-2) scored two goals to tie the game at two and force overtime play. Lakeland had its chances to score the golden goal, but came up short as the Knights capitalized on a Lakeland error in the final 10 seconds of overtime.

Senior forward Lindsay Rogers (Sheboygan, Wis.) got it started for the Muskies in the 75th minute. Rogers drew the goalkeeper out of the box and nailed a wide open shot. 10 minutes later senior midfielder Kristi Borts (Milwaukee, Wis.) capitalized on a free kick just past the 18 yard line to tie the game at two.

After forcing overtime play, Lakeland looked poised to score, but couldn't finish when the opportunity presented itself. The Knights' Kadie Drake pushed a ball just past Lakeland's goalkeeper, Ashley Sarbacker, with 10 seconds left to win the game. Sarbacker recorded nine saves on the afternoon.
