The Lakeland College baseball team split their double-header against NAC foe Dominican University on Sunday, winning game one 12-4 and losing game two, 4-3.
In game one, the Muskies (8-14, 3-7 NAC) sent freshman right-hander Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) to the mound. Mueller pitched well, throwing six innings while allowing four runs, two earned, on ten hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He would not factor into the decision as fellow freshman Charlie Sparrow (1-0) (Milwaukee, Wis.) got the win, throwing three shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks.
Lakeland was trailing 4-3 when Mueller left in the sixth, but their bats came to life in the eighth in support of Sparrow, as the Muskies scored eight runs on six hits and two errors. Senior Jeremy Meier (Sauk City, Wis.) broke the tie with a two RBI single and fellow senior Andrew "Woody" Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) broke the game open with a bases clearing, three RBI double, giving Lakeland a commanding 10-4 lead. Sparrow would hold the stars scoreless to preserve the victory.
Ryan Boettcher (Bonduel, Wis.) led the Muskies at the plate, going 3-6 with one RBI and one run scored. Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc, Wis.) also had three hits, going 3-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.
In game two, sophomore right-hander Andy Chitwood (1-4) (Muscoda, Wis.) got the start. Chitwood lasted five innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits with zero walks and three strikeouts. Erik Kozey (Medford, Wis.) and Ruzek combined to finish the game with three scoreless innings.
The Stars did all of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on five hits and one error. The Muskies only real threat came in the seventh inning, as they scored two runs on two hits, but couldn't keep the rally going, eventually falling 4-3.
Schartner, Ruzek, and Garrett Vincetich-Morris (Janesville, Wis.) each had two hits in game two, with Schartner and Morris each scoring a run and Ruzek contributing with an RBI.
The Muskies will return to action Tuesday, April 19, as they host Rockford College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
