The Lakeland College women's basketball team lost the opening game of the 2011 Lakeland College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night, falling 72-68 to Beloit College.
The Muskies got off to a fast start, playing great team defense and making open shots, however, the Buccaneers were up to the challenge and took a one point, 32-31 lead into the half. The Muskies never trailed by more than six points in the second half, but their lack of execution at the free throw line hurt, as they missed several chances to tie and take the lead late.
Lakeland shot 37.3 percent (25-67) from the field, 21.1 percent (4-19) from behind the three point line and shot 56 percent (14-25) from the charity stripe. While the defense held Beloit to just 36.8 percent shooting from the field and 16.7 percent from behind the arc, the difference was at the line, where the Buccaneers hit 20-of-25 (80 percent) free throws.
There was a silver lining for the Muskies as sophomore transfer, Jessica Genke, led all players with 23 points and 21 rebounds in her first game at Lakeland. Junior Becky Mayo added 14 points and nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Muskies.
Lakeland returns to action tomorrow, Nov. 19, as they face University of Wisconsin-Stout in the consolation game of the 2011 Tip-Off tournament. The game is schedule for a 2 p.m. tip.
