The Lakeland College women's basketball team used a hot shooting afternoon from behind the 3-point line to fuel a 70-53 win in their Northern Athletics Conference opener at Alvern
o College on Saturday.
Lakeland (2-1, 1-0) made 11 of 20 shots from long distance as Aimee Thrune and Dana Henrichs were a combined 7 of 12. The Muskies played great defense as well, holding the Inferno (2-3, 0-1) to just 31 percent (18-58) shooting and forced 19 turnovers.
Lakeland dominated in its first road game, trailing just twice, the last coming at 22-21 with 6:50 left in the first half. The Muskies would take a 37-31 halftime lead having hit eight threes, led by Becca Tilleman who was 3-3.
Lakeland led by as many as 19 in the second half, led by excellent defense, which held Alverno to 1-11 from the 3-point line, and the ability to finish at the free throw line, making 8-9.
Jessica Genke led Lakeland with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Thrune added 12 points and Henrichs scored 11. Becca Tilleman and Becky Mayo grabbed eight rebounds each.
Lakeland continues NAC play in River Forest, Ill., at Dominican University on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m.
