The Lakeland College women's basketball team suffered its first Northern Athletics Conference loss of the season on Saturday, a 71-68 defeat at Dominican University.

The Muskies (2-2, 1-1) got off to a fast start, taking an early lead and increasing it to six points with seven minutes left in the first half. However, Lakeland turnovers and timely shots by the Stars enabled Dominican to take a 33-31 lead into the break.

Dominican took its largest lead of the game, 62-55, with eight minutes left in the game. The Muskies were able to make some shots and close the gap, but some missed free throws down the stretch and the Stars hit a 3-point shot with one second left for the win.

Lakeland was led by sophomore Jessica Genke and Becky Mayo who each had 24 points each, while Mayo added 16 rebounds and Genke had 12.

The Muskies shot 38 percent (24-63) from the floor, 36.4 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line and 64 percent (16-25) from the charity stripe. The Stars shot 39 percent (25-64) from the field, 43 percent (12-28) from three and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line.

The Muskies return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 6, as they play host to NAC foe Wisconsin Lutheran College. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
