Sophomore Tom Phalin led the Lakeland College wrestling team to a 28-23 dual win when he pinned Hunter Cummins of the No. 17-ranked NAIA Concordia University Nebraska in 1:56 Friday evening at Sheboygan Falls High School.
The dual was tied 23-23 before Phalin (Sheboygan) clinched the win at the 285-pound weight class.
"It was an exciting match," said head coach Mike DeRoehn. "It went down to the wire and Tom was outstanding."
The Muskies (1-1) won six out of the 10 weight classes, but had to make up for two forfeits. The team used pins from sophomore Grant Franson (Lindenhurst, Ill.), freshman David Galarno (New Holstein) and Phalin to upset the Bulldogs.
Junior Ryan Renon (Wrightstown) recorded his third technical fall of the year and remains unbeaten. Renon earned the 15-0 tech fall over Nick Sheppard in 6:11.
Sophomore Brent Steudel (Hortonville) and freshman Juan Diaz (Park Ridge, Ill.) also recorded wins for the Muskies. Diaz slid past Alex Stepanke in a 12-11 decision, while Steudel earned the 13-7 decision over Traven Claflin.
"It was a tremendous effort by the guys tonight," said DeRoehn.
Lakeland returns to the mats tomorrow as they head to the Concordia Open in Mequon, Wis.
