Muskies split with Eagles in up and down day

Athletics - posted on 4/7/2012

The Lakeland College softball team saw its eight-game win streak snapped by Edgewood College in a split in Northern Athletics Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Lakeland (10-8, 5-1 NAC) took game one 6-4 behind strong pitching and a solid showing at the plate, but errors cost the Muskies in an 11-7 decision in game two.

Junior Heather Haeflinger highlighted the series with two doubles and a triple as the centerfielder went 5-for-8 at the plate.

In game one, junior pitcher Erin Henk recorded seven strikeouts on the mound to earn her sixth win of the year. Offensively, Henk went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.

Mental lapses and errors cost Lakeland in game two as Edgewood put together a five-run first inning to take an early lead. Lakeland was quick to answer with a four-run inning, before eventually taking a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the second. Edgewood held Lakeland scoreless in the final four innings of the game to earn its second NAC win of the season.

Head coach Chad Buchmann was pleased with the team's play in game one, but was disappointed with the Muskies lapse in game two.

"We had too many errors in clutch time that cost us the second game," said Buchmann. "We battled back in the first three innings after being down and I thought we had Edgewood, but we were inconsistent when it mattered most."

Senior Leah Sheahan recorded two doubles with four RBIs, while sophomore Sammy Rieder posted triples in each game. Freshman Kaitlyn Hoffmann hit a triple in game one and finished the series 3-for-6.

Lakeland returns to NAC action as they travel to Fond du Lac, Wis., to take on Marian University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
