Sheahan's go-ahead run lifts Muskies to split with Dominican

Athletics - posted on 4/15/2012

Senior Leah Sheahan scored the go-ahead run on a single by freshman Kate Wallen in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to lead the Lakeland College softball team to a 4-3 win over Dominican University in Northern Athletics Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The 14-10 Muskies dropped a 1-0 nine-inning game to the Stars in game one, but willed their way to the split as the bats came alive at the right times.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth, Lakeland was down 3-1, but tied the game at three behind a triple from junior Jenny LaLuzerne followed by an RBI double from sophomore Sammy Rieder. Junior pitcher Erin Henk drove in Rieder to tie the game at three and the Muskies' defense held in the top of the seventh.

Sheahan started the Muskies come-from-behind win when she doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Elizabeth Zimmerman. Sheahan went 2-for-2 with two doubles to lead the Muskies at the plate. Wallen finished 2-for-2, while Rieder went 2-for-3 with one RBI and run.

Henk picked up her ninth win of the season as the Hoopeston, Ill., native pitched two complete games.

The Muskies couldn't find a rhythm offensively in game one and struck out 12 times by Dominican's Emily Mahoney. The Stars scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to take Lakeland. The Muskies recorded four hits led by Sheahan who went 2-for-4.

The split moves head coach Chad Buchmann to six games from breaking Lakeland's all-time wins record.
