MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Lakeland College softball team secured the season sweep over the Milwaukee School of Engineering behind a home run performance from senior Leah Sheahan in Northern Athletics Conference action Tuesday afternoon.
The 16-10 Muskies used a four-run sixth inning to take the Raiders 5-3 in game one and run-ruled MSOE in game two in a 10-2 decision.
Sophomore Sammy Rieder led the Muskies in game one as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and a double. Rieder posted two RBIs to lead the Muskies' comeback after facing a 3-0 deficit heading into the sixth inning.
Junior McKenna Wenzel gave Lakeland the 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth when she singled to right field to bring in sophomore Chelsea Gile. Lakeland held MSOE in the final two innings to earn the NAC victory.
On the mound, junior Erin Henk earned her 10th win of the season and recorded two strikeouts.
The bats came alive in game two led by Sheahan who homered as the Muskies imposed their will on the Raiders. Junior Heather Haeflinger, who ranks fourth in the nation in triples, hit her eighth triple and chipped in with a double as she led the team at plate going 3-for-5.
Junior Jenny LaLuzerne also tripled for Lakeland, while Henk doubled and won her 11th game. LaLuzerne, Henk, Sheahan and Rieder all posted 3-for-4 performances at the plate. Lakeland generated 16 hits and 10 RBIs en route to improving its NAC record to 11-3.
Head coach Chad Buchmann was pleased with the team's play. "After a rocky start, we settled down and started getting some hits," said Buchmann. "We played well offensively and hopefully we carry the momentum into the reminder of the week."
With the sweep, Buchmann moves to five games away from Lakeland's all time wins record.
The Muskies return to action on Thursday as they host Ripon College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Memorial Park in Howards Grove, Wis.
