The Lakeland Muskies soccer team dropped their game on Sunday afternoon to the St. John's University (Minn.) Johnnies by a score of 5-2. The Johnnies took an early 2-0 lead before the Muskies tied it up at 2-2. Less than one minute after the Muskies tied the game the Johnnies took the lead for good on a cross from the right side of the goal that was then headed to freshman Tyler Kodet, who kicked it past a diving Joe Silverberg from about six yards out.
With just 13 minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the first half Kodet would score his first of two goals on the day by putting the shot over senior Silverberg's head after senior forward Tudor Flintham crossed the ball to him. The Johnnies would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
In a second half that saw a total of six goals, the Johnnies scored three minutes in on a penalty kick by Flintham. The forward beat two Lakeland defenders before junior Landing Sonko was called for tripping him in the box setting up the penalty kick.
The Muskies would fight back though just over a minute later. In a series that saw three shots on goal for the Muskies. Junior forward Scott Kress would put a shot on goal that was blocked by sophomore goaltender Matt Sundberg. Freshman Kevin Fitchett would pick up the rebound and return a shot that was blocked by a St. John's defender. Junior forward Sam Schroeder would pick up that deflection and put the ball in the back of the net drawing the Muskies within one.
In the 73rd minute junior defenseman Corey Petzold crossed the ball from approximately midfield to sophomore Zach Buchman. Buchman controlled the ball at the top of the box, dribbled it in the box and scored, knotting the game at 2-2.
Four minutes after taking the lead 3-2, the Johnnies would add an insurance goal when freshman Levi Lowell took a shot on Silverberg, however, the ball slipped through Silverberg's hands and sophomore AJ Tufte finished off the play.
In the 86th minute, the Johnnies would add one more goal when senior forward Dan Swift dribbled the ball down the field and put the ball into the upper right corner of the net.
St. John's ended the day with 14 shots on goal, while the Muskies had seven. Muskies goaltender Silverberg ended the day with nine saves. St. John's totaled 20 fouls compared to the Muskies 12. Sonko was given a yellow card in the 62nd minute.
The Muskies are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against UW-Whitewater at Muskie Fields on the Lakeland campus.
