Muskie Men Topple Pioneers 2-1

The Lakeland Muskies soccer program improved to 5-5-3 on the season with a big 2-1 victory over the UW-Platteville Pioneers on a cold day at Muskie Field. Freshmen Ted Cormier scored both goals in a match that saw a total of five cautions issued.

"We had a big game against Marian yesterday," said head coach Marc Colwell. "We started nine different guys than what we did the other day so our depth really showed. We were able to rest some starters today and got some different looks and we got the win."

In the 24th minute sophomore Ryan Condon hit Cormier with the through ball. Cormier sped pass the defenders, collected the pass and beat the goaltender in a one-on-one to the left side of the net.

Nine minutes later freshman Alex Albright crossed the ball to freshman Ben Terpening who ripped a shot to the back right corner of the goal from just inside the box, to draw the Pioneers into a 1-1 tie.

In the 68th minute freshman Gabriel Hernandez Garcia would connect with Cormier, who was racing down the right sideline. Cormier gathered the pass and took on a Pioneer defender one-on-one. The freshman performed a great spin move about six yards out from the goal and not only beat the defender but the keeper as he put it into the top corner of the net to give the Muskies a 2-1 advantage.

"That (Cormier's second goal) was a great goal," said Colwell. "He put the ball on his left foot and put it upper 90 over the keeper. He (Cormier) has that attacking mentality; with Scotty (Scott Kress) up there we can score a lot of different ways. We have a lot of dangerous players, if teams focus on one player they can shut him down, but another one will step up."

Freshman Chris Lee gave normal Lakeland goaltender, senior Joe Silverberg, the day off. Lee tallied nine saves over the course of the 90 minute game. Both teams combined for 41 fouls during the course of play.

"Chris did well today," said Colwell. "He is a very talented freshman keeper. Obviously, Joe Silverberg is our starter, but Chris is learning and getting better and better. Chris is probably going to step in and win the starting position for us next year. He is very talented and I have no qualms about putting him out there. We can put him in big games and he will come up big for us."

The Muskies will be in action at home against Dominican on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m. for an LMC conference match-up.
