Several members of the Lakeland College track and field team set new personal records at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitation on Saturday.
Those records translated into points as the men finished seventh in the field.
Freshman Dylan Grimsrud (Sheboygan, Wis.) led the way as he contributed 19 points, including a first-place finish in the 10,000-meter run. He also scored points by placing eighth in the 800-meter run and by helping the men's sprint medley take second. The 4x100 meter relay, featuring Joey Salazar (Beaver Dam, Wis.), Patrick Johnson (Pontiac, Mich.), Yaphay Harvey (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Aaron Ash (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), placed fourth. Harvey, Ash and Salazar also competed on the sprint medley team.
In the men's field events, Johnson placed fourth in the triple jump, setting a new personal best with a jump of 11.90 meters.
On the women's side, Lakeland scored eight team points, but several athletes set new personal records. While no one placed, all three athletes set new personal bests in the 200, led by Vashia Gordon (Green Bay, Wis.), who finished with a time of 28.53, breaking her old PR by 1.3 seconds. Danielle Holzer (Plymouth, Wis.) and Veronica Lau (Germantown, Wis.) also set new personal records, running in 29.28 and 29.93 respectively, both shaving off over 1.5 seconds from their previous bests.
In the women's field events, Gordon placed sixth in the high jump with a new personal best of 1.43 meters, earning the team three points.
Overall, interim head coach Eric Treske was pleased with the team's effort and performance. "Everyone gave it their all and we were impressed with the outcome," said Treske. "Our goal is to make some noise at the conference meet in three weeks. We are putting in the work and it's starting to translate into success."
Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, April 21, when the Muskies travel to De Pere, Wis., to take part in the St. Norbert College Invitational. Events begin at 9 a.m.
