The Lakeland College men's volleyball team returned from spring break in top form as the Muskies beat Wisconsin Volleyball Conference foe Marquette University 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19).
The Muskies (12-12, 6-5 WVC) were ready to play and showed the kind of team they can be.
Lakeland was led offensively by freshman Alec Redlich (Wauwatosa, Wis.) who had 27 kills, while sophomore Ralph Kokoszka (Palos Heights, Ill.) added 12 kills and three blocks. Freshman setter Dayton Erickson (Trevor, Wis.) continues to excel, tallying 53 assists.
Senior libero Andy Cheever (Greenfield, Wis.) led the defensive effort with 20 digs.
"We came out very strong in set one," said Lakeland head coach Joe Julkowski. "We were playing with real purpose. We suffered a setback in set number two, but we overcame it and pushed through. I was proud of the way the guys responded after the second set."
Three Muskies also found their way into the record books in the win. Redlich's 27 kills set a new single-match record, while Erickson's 53 assists are the third most in a single-match. Cheever's 20 digs are the fifth most in a single-match.
Lakeland returns to the court Saturday, March 24, as the Muskies travel to DeKalb, Ill., to take part in the MIVA Championships hosted by Northern Illinois University. The times and opponents are yet to be determined.
