Lakeland drops season opener in Tucson

The Lakeland College softball team dropped its season opener in a 13-3 loss to McKendree University at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.

Sophomore Sammy Rieder (New Holstein) led the Muskies (0-1) going 2-for-3 at the plate and one run scored. Rieder scored on a single by junior pitcher Erin Henk (Hoopeston, Ill.) in the fourth inning, but it was too little as McKendree scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to earn the victory.

Senior Leah Sheahan (Salem) and junior Heather Haeflinger (Shawano) also scored for Lakeland.

Lakeland returns to action on March 12 as they play Nazareth College in game three of the Tucson Invitational. Game time is slated for 5:30 CST in Tucson, Ariz.
