Muskies of the Week: Derek Loomans and Kaitlyn Hoffmann

Freshman Kaitlyn Hoffmann and Derek Loomans have been named Lakeland College's Muskies of the Week for their performance in action last week. Read about their success below.

Kaitlyn Hoffmann

Freshman Kaitlyn Hoffmann garnered Muskie of the Week honors after helping lead the Lakeland College softball team to a sweep over Alverno College in the team's Northern Athletics Conference and home opener on March 28.

The 5-foot-10 shortstop hit her first career home run in the fourth inning of game two and propelled the Muskies to a 9-4 win. Hoffmann's three-run homer sparked the team's six-run inning after Alverno took a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning.

The Plymouth, Wis., native finished the doubleheader with a .429 batting average and a .857 slugging percentage. She recorded four RBIs, three hits and two runs.

For her efforts, Hoffmann was nominated for NAC student-athlete of the Week.

Hoffmann is majoring in early childhood education.

Q. What was it like to hit your first career home run?
A: It felt good to be able to help out the team when needed.

Q: What has been your favorite softball memory?
A:  Making a lot of new friends while playing.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?
A:  Winning games.

Q: Who would win in a homerun derby, you or assistant coach Elisa Waltz?
A:  Coach E, because when she eats her Wheaties she can hit it over the fence.


Derek Loomans

Sophomore Derek Loomans garnered Muskie of the Week honors after helping lead the Lakeland College baseball team to a 10-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist Bible College.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander was impressive in the victory, pitching a seven-hit shutout, walking one batter while striking out three.

The Brandon, Wis., native improved to 4-0 on the season with a team-leading 1.08 ERA. He has allowed 19 hits in 25 innings, while recording 13 strikeouts and holding opponents to a .211 batting average.

Loomans has proven that he can be a capable starter at the collegiate level and the Muskies will depend on him to continue his performance throughout the season.

Loomans is majoring in marketing and pursuing a minor in computer science.

Q. What was your favorite memory from the trip to Fort Myers, Fla.?
A: Winning baseball games.

Q: What is your best pitch?
A:  My curveball.

Q: As a former catcher, what is the hardest part of converting to a pitcher?
A:  It has actually made the game easier because I have a better understanding of calling pitches. It is hard not being able to hit though.

Q: What is your greatest baseball achievement?
A:  Throwing a three-hit shutout at the Legion state tournament.
