- ABOUT LAKELAND

Hannah Landgraf(Sr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.) scored two goals and Brittni Peterson (So.-Elmwood, Wis.) picked up her first collegiate win in goal as the Lakeland College women's soccer team defeated Alverno College 4-1 in the 2012 Northern Athletics Conference opener for both teams.
The Muskies picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2 overall. Lakeland also continued its domination of the series against Alverno, improving to 11-0 all-time against the Inferno, who dropped to 1-1 this season.
The Muskies needed three goals in the second half to open up a close game. Lakeland led 1-0 at halftime, scoring 8:37 into the match when Landgraf deposited a pass from Liz Pritzl (Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) for the opening goal.
The score remained tied into the second half and looked to be anyone's game until Lakeland struck twice in a span of 10:03. Landgraf scored her second goal of the game 13:58 into the second half after Kelly Jens (Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) stole a pass near midfield and with speed dribbled through the defense and past the goalkeeper on the left side, centering the ball to Landgraf for the tap-in and a 2-0 lead.
The Muskies scored again just over ten minutes later when Ashley Jennings (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) was the recipient of Landgraf's work, taking a pass from the senior and popping it up and over Alverno goalkeeper Samantha Robinson to make the score 3-0.
The Inferno crept back into the game just over three minutes later as Bryanna Gayle took a pass from Nava Moniriarani, worked through traffic in the box and beat Peterson one-on-one from straight on to make it 3-1 in the 73rd minute. Alverno got no closer, though, as Peterson made three key saves and the Muskies scored an insurance goal when Brooke Schallar (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) made a run down the right side and drilled a long shot from 25 yards out and into the net for the final score.
Peterson made seven saves in goal for Lakeland, stoning Alverno several times from point-blank range to get the win in just her third-ever game in goal. Landgraf and Schallar both finished with eight shots each as the Muskies outshot the Inferno 24-15, including a 15-8 edge in shots on goal.
Robinson made 11 saves for Alverno in goal. Gayle took six shots to lead the Inferno offensively, while Andrea Bowhall added four shots.
Lakeland now gets an eight-day break between games, next taking the field Thursday, Sept. 13 at Beloit College in a non-conference match. Game time in Beloit will be 4:30 p.m.
