Lakeland Men’s Soccer Beats Crusaders 4-1

Athletics - posted on 10/11/2004

On a sunny fall day the Lakeland College Men’s Soccer team picked up a convincing 4-1 win over the Crusaders of Maranatha Baptist. Sophomore midfielder Mike Gorack (Algonquin, Illinois) had one goal and two assists to lead the way.

The win improves Lakeland’s overall record to 6-8-1 and puts them back in contention in the Lake Michigan Conference race with a 2-1 mark.

The Muskies took control of the game from the opening whistle by possessing the ball and controlling the tempo. Lakeland would be rewarded for their efforts in the 15th minute when Gorack set up freshman forward Zach Buchman for the game’s first goal.

Gorack would set up the 2nd goal just a minute later as he flicked on a perfectly served ball from back David Arrowood to midfielder Shuaib Ahmed, who headed it home for the 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders drew the game to 2-1 when a Lakeland defensive miscue resulted in a goal in the 18th minute. There would be no more scoring in the half though the Muskies continued to apply pressure.

In the second half, Gorack resumed his control over the midfield as he laced in his own goal off a Buchman assist to give Lakeland a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Scott Kress finalized the scoring in the 81st minute when he knocked home a great thru ball from Kiel native Chris Christopherson.

Junior goalkeeper Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Indiana) gave up one goal and made three saves while freshman goalie Bryan Stokes (Naperville, Illinois) had one save.

The Muskies out shot their visitors 22 to 11 on the day with 14 coming on goal.

The Muskie Men will be back in action Saturday when they host last year’s conference champions Concordia University at 3:00 p.m. in a battle for supremacy in the LMC. Concordia and Lakeland currently have identical 2-1 records in the LMC.
