Muskies wrap up season with tie against Marian

Killian McKenzie (Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) scored the tying goal in the 74th minute and the Lakeland College men's soccer team concluded its season with a 1-1 tie against Marian University Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Conference match.

McKenzie scored his first career goal and the Muskies held on the rest of the way, withstanding a final Marian flourish in the final seconds of the second overtime to snap an eight-match losing streak. The Muskies finished the season with a 2-14-3 record and 0-8-3 in the NAC.

Lakeland gave up an early goal in the first half, letting the Sabres get behind the defense a couple times and paying for it when Ramon Sutherland found Everett Zank with a pass and Zank was one-on-one with goalkeeper Alex Piekarski (Sr.-Menasha, Wis.) and scored easily at 20:45 of the match.

The Muskies missed a great chance in the first half when Paul Elzinga (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) chased down a ball just before the Marian goalkeeper and popped the ball up and over the keeper but just over the crossbar. Lakeland had another major chance early in the first half when McKenzie served a ball in from the right side and Farouk Dadzie (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) headed it in the air and just off the crossbar.

The Muskies continued to take over play, outshooting the Sabres 12-2 in the second half and finally tying it on McKenzie's goal at 73:54. Lakeland put on a final rush late in regulation, as Dadzie hit the bar again and Brandon Barry (So.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) and Daiki Sato (Jr.-Matsudo, Japan) both had shots on goal in the final minute.

Lakeland had the only shot on goal in the first overtime, and both teams had chances in the second overtime. Marian thought it won the game when it scored with less than 10 seconds left in the second overtime, but an offsides call waived off the goal to the dismay of the Sabres.

The Muskies outshot Marian 21-12 for the match, led by Dadzie with five shots and Elzinga with four. Nate Peltonen led the Sabres with three shots, all on goal.

Piekarski made eight saves in his final collegiate match. It was the final home match and final match for both Piekarski and Daiya Akiyama (Sr.-Ichihara, Japan).

Marian finished its season as well with another tie, its sixth of the season (3-9-6 overall, 2-5-4 NAC). Jameson Hoerter made three saves in the first half and Bryce Woldt made seven saves in the second half and overtime periods.
