RIVER FOREST, ILL. - Anna Faust (Jr.-Cross Plains, Wis.) posted a career high 19 kills and the Lakeland College women's volleyball team won its first match of the Dominican University Star Classic, defeating Greenville (Ill.) College in four sets Friday afternoon.
The Muskies ran their season-opening winning streak to five matches before losing their second match of the tournament, falling to Willamette (Ore.) University in three sets. Lakeland dropped to 5-1 overall on the season.
Faust keyed Lakeland to a four-set win over Greenville, a 25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19 victory. She finished with a robust .400 hitting percentage against the Panthers, recording her 19 kills with just three errors in 40 attempts.
Taylor Daus (Sr.-Bay Port, Wis.) also had a solid match hitting with 12 kills to just two errors in 36 attempts (.278 hitting percentage). As a team Lakeland hit .193 for the match with 49 kills and 21 errors in 145 attempts.
Katie Freitag (Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) added nine kills and led the Muskies with five blocks in the opener. Brittany Reindl (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) set the offense with 32 assists and Caleigh Galvan (Fr.-New Lenox, Ill.) led the team with 19 digs.
Willamette dominated the second match, defeating Lakeland in straight sets 25-13, 25-13, 25-23. The Muskies totaled more errors than kills over the first two sets and then lost a close third set after leading late.
Lakeland fell behind big early in the first two sets but was locked in a tight third set and led as late as 22-21 after a Bearcats service error. Willamette scored four of the final five points though, to close out the match.
Daus and Freitag led the Muskies with six kills each, with Freitag also adding four blocks. Faust paced the team with 12 digs and Reindl finished with 15 assists.
Lakeland continues play in the Star Classic on Saturday, beginning with a game against the host school Dominican at 12:30 p.m. The Muskies will then participate in either the third place game at 3 p.m. or the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Live stats and live video for both games will be available at http://www.dustars.com/sports/2012/9/5/WVB_0905123309.aspx.
