NAPERVILLE, ILL. - Lakeland College's Beau Gundersen (So.-New Berlin, Wis.) finished in the top 15 to lead the Muskie men's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Cress Creek Invitational at the Cress Creek Country Club on Monday.
Gundersen shot a score of 122 to finish 14 strokes over par, as the tournament was shortened to 27 holes due to daylight. He opened with a round of 83, putting him 16th after 18 holes, and then shot 39 on the final nine holes to finish tied for 13th individually.
Gundersen's total helped the Muskies finish with a team score of 505 and to move up two spots after their first round score of 341 had Lakeland in eighth place in the team standings. The Muskies finished just one shot from a top-five finish as a team, coming in one stroke behind North Park (Ill.) College.
Matt Lewellyn (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) finished four strokes behind Gundersen in 26th with a score of 126, including a round of 84 on the 18 and 42 on the last nine. Tyler Kubicek (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) tied for 38th at 130, shooting a 90 in the first round before rallying to shoot 40 on the abbreviated second round. Ryan Newburry (So.-Campbellsport, Wis.) and Casey Wusterbarth (Jr.-Oconto, Wis.) finished 41st and tied for 42nd, respectively, with Newburry shooting 131 and Wusterbarth one stroke back at 132.
Carthage College won the tournament with a score of 464, easily holding off Wheaton (Ill.) College, which finished with a score of 477. Jonny Tink of Wheaton won medalist honors with a score of three-over par 111.
Lakeland concludes its fall season next weekend with the Northern Athletics Conference Championships at Whistling Straight Golf Course in Haven. Play begins Sunday, Oct. 14 and continues through Monday.
