The Lakeland College Muskies improved to 3-0 in the Lake Michigan Conference with a 60-25 victory over Alverno College on Wednesday evening. The Muskies were led by a great defensive effort and strong post play.

"We played pretty decent tonight," said senior Beth Porter. "We came out pretty good in the first half and got up and down pretty good. We ran the fast break on them and knocked down some shots. Defensively, we let down a little bit in the second half, but I think we'll be able to pick that up again."

After committing two turnovers on the first two possessions of the game and finding themselves down 2-0 the Muskies went on a 24-0 tear to go up 26-2 with 7:37 remaining in the first half and never looked back. The Muskies cruised to a 34-9 halftime lead and in the second half found themselves up by as many as 41.

The defense was the story of the game with the Muskies holding the third best scoring offense in the LMC (61 ppg) to just 20 percent shooting from the field and the second best rebounding offense to just nine offensive boards.

"We have that expectation out of defense every game," said head coach April Arvan when asked about her teams' defensive performance. "Our goal is to hold teams to below their averages and we definitely did that tonight."

The post game played great for the Muskies with forwards Porter and junior Danielle Duranceau each netting 12 points. On defense senior forward Nikki Boeckh led the team with seven boards, while Duranceau grabbed six.

"It was a great game from our inside game," said Arvan. "Beth Porter and Danielle Duranceau played well, while Nikki Beckoh came off the bench and grabbed seven boards. (Sophomore) Jenna Boehm went 3-4 on the night. Our plan going into the game was to pound the ball inside and we showed we could do that tonight."

The bench also received an opportunity to play tonight and coach Arvan insists that they earned their time tonight regardless of the score.

"Our bench has been practicing very well," said Arvan. "They have practiced well and they got an opportunity to show what they can do."

The Muskies, now 5-3 overall will travel to Marian College on Saturday, Dec. 10 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
