My Best Friend's Wedding

A little summer story of mine...

So, the first Sunday in August I got a phone call from my best friend, Heidi, who lives in River Falls, WI. She informs me that she and her boyfriend have entered to win a FAIRytale wedding at the State Fair in MN. If they win, the wedding will take place live on TV at the State Fair at the end of the month. And tonight, besides just entering, she and her boyfriend, Scott, have just found out that they're in the top 4.

So, I'm thinking- Crazy?!?! Right? Right! My head was spinning. Imagine finding out (all in a few min) that your best friend is potentially engaged, getting married at the end of the month, you need to be maid-of-honor, everything will be on camera, and all of this takes place about 300 miles away?! I was basically in shock, but I calmed down as much as possible to wait for the final verdict on Friday.

I didn't make it until Friday. On Wednesday morning, as I prepared to leave to my internship, I got a text from Scott asking what kind of ring Heidi wanted, and he told me that he needed to know soon because he was going ring shopping in a few hours. It turns out, the show had just talked with him, and he and Heidi had been chosen to be the FAIRytale couple. AND, Heidi couldn't know this yet because she "and Scott" would find out live on the Friday show of Twin Cities Live that they were chosen, and Scott was to then, in the moment of joy, propose on camera. At this point, shock and disbelief turned into an extremely energized excitement as I realized my best friend was getting married!

The next few days were tough, I had to keep the secret from Heidi. At least, to my advantage, I didn't have to keep the secret while seeing her face and being looked at with her priceless big brown eyes. I tried my best to hide all that I knew as she talked to me about her suspicions that Scott may be up-to something, and it turned out that she never had a clue that I knew.

Friday was a day that made me nervous. The live show in the Twin Cities viewing area was to start at 3, but I couldn't see it all take place. I had to wait for Heidi's phone call.... finally, it came in, and she couldn't have been more excited about it all including that I was able to get out of another committment and be her maid-of-honor. She asked me to come dress shopping in a few days, and I happily drove across the State to-do so. I was then, later that evening, able to watch the video of the show on the TCL website.

After two trips to see Heidi and assist her a little bit in wedding planning, the third trip for her wedding was actually happening. I went the afternoon before the big day so that I could be there for the rehearsal. I met the producers and hosts of the show, but I was most excited to see Heidi and Scott and Heidi's happy parents. We were all ready to make this thing happen.

The day of the wedding, I woke up at Heidi's with her at 4 am. We picked up the other bridesmaid and headed into the Twin Cities to the State Fairgrounds. We spent over 5 hours in the fair's administration building getting our hair and make-up done. It was a light-heartened prep time though because we were all just anxious and happy, and the wedding planner kept us smiling. After hair and makeup, we met up with Scott and his best man and groomsman, and pictures began. We were paraded around the fair for about an hour and stopped for photo opportunities at Scott and Heidi's favorite vendors. All eyes were on the happy couple as they shined with big smiles in bright sunlight. We then went back and met with the families, and then we headed over to the station's outdoor studio on the fairgrounds. We were kept in the backroom while the one-hour live special leading up to the wedding began. The bestman and I were interviewed live about our relationships with the bride and groom. I was super nervous going on live TV, but the interview got the nerves out of me and allowed me to go backstage and continue to focus on Heidi without the hindrance of anxiety that had been present earlier.

Finally, it was time for the ceremony, and eveything went perfectly. There was humor and sincerity mixed together into a FAIRytale wedding.
