Big Event for Little Kids
Posted on 4/11/2011 12:44:38 AM

Hello everyone,

I'm still up, supposed to be writing a rough draft of a research paper that is due tomorrow, but lately I have no need for sleep so I thought I'd do some writing on here instead. (:

For starters, I'd like to tell all of you about my weekend; it was pretty crazy. Friday, after class, I drove to Green Bay (if any of you are familiar with Green Bay, I was at Shopko Hall, right across from Lambeau field), I was there to help set up for an event called The Big Event for Little Kids. I was there from 12:30-3:00 and I helped St. Vincent Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital and Prevea Clinic set up their booth called Safety Town. It was pretty fun. Saturday morning I went back to Green Bay, you guessed it, Shopko Hall again to help work the event that I set up for on Friday. It was estimated that about 5000 kids and family members came to The Big Event for Little Kids. This place was packed. There was constant activity on the stage, and companies from all over Green Bay had booths set up for these kids and their families to learn something, or do something fun. The goal of our booth was simple, promote safety to the kids and their parents. We had one table set up with a bunch of different helmets. The kids and their parents had to try and guess what all the different helmets were used for. The next station was related to helmet use. There were 2 containers; one had a Jell-O brain in it and the other a broken egg. The kids were told about how their brain is very important, but also rather fragile. They were shown a demo of an egg wearing a helmet being dropped onto the table and not breaking. The volunteers working this table told the kids that their brain would look like the broken egg if they fell and didn't have a helmet on... kind of scary and mean to tell a little kid that, but I guess it's sort of the truth. The next station was my station and this was all about food, medicine and poison look-alikes. We had 2 games for the kids to play here. One was a shopping game where the kids had to take a bunch of different items and put them in either the "yummy" bag or the "yucky" bag. The other game was to show some of the older kids and the parents how simple things can look similar to foods and drinks kids like. We had cough syrup and kool-aid. We had maple syrup and motor oil. We had windex, jet dry, powerade, fruit drink, and scope mouthwash. And we had 3 containers with medicine pills and candy combined. It was scary how similar all of these items looked to each other. At the end we gave the kids and the parents some Mr. Yuck stickers to take home and label things in their own house. Finally, to end our section we had a mini road assembled and the children and their parents had to stop at the stop sign, look both ways, and use the cross walk to leave our area.  Overall it was a really fun day, but it was long. I was there from 8:45-4:15.

Other than that, I don't have a whole lot of new or exciting information for you guys... My girlfriend and my 6 month "anniversary" is coming up... so I guess that is kinda exciting... crazy how time flies. My internship at the Boys and Girls Club is going well thus far. I'm 23 hours in, only 17 more to go. Also, only 3 more weeks of class before finals... I'm ready for this semester to be over and I'm ready to start my May Term internship at St. Vincent Hospital. Then bring on Summer!

Hope everyone is doing well. I'd still really appreciate some feedback. Don't be afraid to be the first person to comment... I'd like that.
