New Year Brings Trials and Triumphs to Lakeland Wrestlers

The Lakeland College wrestling team continued its ground-breaking success of 2007 into the new year as the Muskies secured a hard-fought, sixth-place finish as a team against tough competition at this past weekend's Cornell Matman Invite in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Lakeland, ranked No. 29 in the nation according to the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, battled with some of the top-ranked wrestling programs in the country, including Luther College, Coe College, Buena Vista University and host Cornell College.

After sitting out with an injury since the end of November, the 6-foot-3 senior guard made his debut back on the court with 10 points and three rebounds in just 13 minutes in the Muskies' 75-64 victory over Northland College on Friday, Jan. 5.

Known to his teammates as "Groobs," the Sheboygan native is currently third on the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game and third on the team in the rebounding column with 4.2 rebounds per game.

Hot Shooting Propels Lakeland to Sixth Straight Win

After an 11-day holiday layoff, you might expect the Lakeland College men's basketball team to need a few days to shake off the winter doldrums and the Christmas goodies. Maybe not.

The Muskies, playing for the first time since Dec. 20, scored 24 of their first 30 points Friday night from behind the 3-point line and grabbed control early in a 75-64 non-conference win over visiting Northland College.
