When Duty Calls

Lakeland College wrestler Matt Benson learned in August that instead of returning to Lakeland to finish his business degree and wrestle, he would be headed to Iraq to join his National Guard unit and serve his country.

"My unit left for Iraq at the end of July, but I couldn't go because I had a wrestling-related shoulder injury and I had shoulder surgery in March," said Benson. "Once I was healed, they shipped me out."

The junior guard recently found her place back in the Muskies' starting line-up and has provided increased scoring in the past few games.

The 5-foot-9 Clayton, Wis., native recorded eight points in the squad's loss to Concordia, Wis., last Tuesday, then chipped in six points and four rebounds in a win over Clarke College on Friday.

The 149-pound freshman went 2-1 in his last meet with Lakeland's grapplers at the Knox Duals in Galesburg, Ill., on Saturday.

Although the 5-foot-7 Oak Lawn, Ill., native lost his first match, 13-5, as the Muskies' battled a 21st ranked Elmhurst squad, he bounced back to win his remaining two matches of the day.

Boehm's 28 Points Help Muskies Snap Losing Streak with Win Over Clarke

The Lakeland women's basketball team (6-5, 3-2 NAC) brought their recent three-game losing skid to an end on Friday, Jan. 5, as they pulled out a 67-62 victory on the road in non-conference action with Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa.

"It was a tight game," said head coach April Arvan. "It was nice to get a win on the road and nice to see us play better than we have for the last couple of weeks."
