On and Off-Campus Employment

Sledding

Employment opportunities, such as on-campus jobs, internships and practical training programs under USCIS and/or Lakeland Rules and Regulations, are available. An international student may work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and up to 40 hours during vacation.

You must apply in person for an on-campus job after arrival at the campus. International students are working with an average of 10 hours per week, and hourly wage ranges from $5.70 to $6.30.

On and off campus employment should not be considered as a significant source of income, and cannot generally be used as a source of your funds for education.

To work off campus, you must be in a degree program for a minimum of one academic year and obtain proper authorization from USCIS or Lakeland College. Employment without authorization is a violation of your F1 visa status, and you are subject to deportation.

Off-Campus Employment Categories

  1. Employment authorized because of severe economic hardship.
  2. Certain employment sponsored by international originations
  3. Practical training (OPT & CPT): F-1 students may participate in two kinds of practical training: curricular practical training (CPT)/internship and optional practical training (OPT). Both OPT and CPT allow an F-1 student to work off campus in a job related to his or her major field of study.

For off campus employment under practical training programs, an international student must be full time on the degree program for at least one academic year (9 consecutive months or two semesters) before starting work. The college has additional requirement for internships.

Detailed information regarding employment opportunities will be given to you during the international student orientation right after you arrive at Lakeland.
