More than a dozen members of Lakeland’s Pi Kappa Gamma sorority volunteered at Saturday’s American Cancer Society Run/Walk at Elkhart Lake’s famed Road America race track. This marked the sixth consecutive year Lakeland’s Pi Kapps helped out with the logistics of this popular annual event. Word is getting out about Lakeland’s new Lunch & Learn program, and judging from students’ level of engagement, they value these regular educational initiatives sponsored by the college’s Student Success and Engagement Office. Earlier this week, the largest turnout yet participated in a dynamic Lunch & Learn session titled “Financial Literacy.” Nearly 40 students attended the interactive presentation by Scott Niederjohn, Lakeland’s Charlotte and Walter Kohler Charitable Trust associate professor of business administration. More than 20 Lakeland College accounting majors took an informational field trip to Lambeau Field, where they visited with Lakeland graduate and Green Bay Packers Accounting Manager Carla Schrank. The Lakeland contingent began the excursion with a one-hour stadium tour. The group was then joined by Schrank and Scott Murphy, the Packers’ assistant accounting manager, for a discussion about the NFL team’s accounting procedures and challenges. Stephen Reid, professor of Christian Scriptures at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, presented Tuesday morning’s Mission House Center lecture, “The Beginning of Wisdom: Happiness, Success and the Book of Proverbs.” Reid encouraged students to interact with people from different backgrounds and belief systems. Lakeland College has been awarded a $446,706 Career Ready Internship Grant that will fund hundreds of new student internships over the next three years. The college estimates that the grant, which is made available through the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation, will support 250 new internships for Lakeland students – internships that will pay a highly competitive wage of $12 an hour throughout the standard internship length of 150 hours.
