More than 20 Lakeland College December graduates brought family members and friends to the 1862 Lounge on Friday night for a special celebration of their achievement. Hors d’oeuvres were served, and after a welcome by President Dan Eck, December graduates Demonta Hall (communication) and Lynn Pipke (criminal justice) gave passionate speeches about their love for Lakeland and how meaningful their time at the college was. Lakeland College student Malcolm Blakley capped a well-received first semester of the new Coffee House series on Thursday with a soulful performance on saxophone at the 1862 Lounge. Blakley played a nice variety of pieces, including the Dave Brubeck classic “Take Five” and Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island.” Blakley closed his show by inviting fellow Lakeland student and talented singer Joshua Guy to join him on stage. Continuing a decades-long tradition, Lakeland’s Phi Delta Omega sorority is once again sponsoring a Christmas Giving Tree, an initiative that will make one Sheboygan family’s holiday season warmer. The Phi Delts, working with the Salvation Army, have adopted a local family in need, and hope to donate gifts – most of which are necessities many of us take for granted – through the Giving Tree. Members of Lakeland’s Beta Sigma Omega fraternity worked in three shifts on Wednesday to help rid campus of litter and debris. The early morning shift, made up of Joshua Guy, Romain Johnson, Vincent Stepney-Willis and Marvin Warfield, cleaned up around the apartments and dorms, while the late-morning shift of Sterling Gladney and Airiss Hargrow worked around Brotz, Laun, Bradley and Chase. Lakeland’s Jazz Ensemble performed at its annual fall concert Tuesday night, playing five songs and welcoming special guests, the Concordia University Saxophone Quartet, to the stage.
