Lakeland College students running for Student Government Association positions for the 2016-17 academic year introduced themselves during a presentation earlier this week. All of the candidates told the audience about themselves, why they’re running and how they plan to make a positive impact on Lakeland during the next school year. Song, dance, bright-colored costumes and laughter filled the Lakeland College Bradley Theatre Thursday night as “Hairspray” opened its four-show stand. Judging by crowd reaction, the largest-scale production in Associate Professor of Theatre and Speech Charlie Krebs’ nearly decade-long career at Lakeland was an opening-night hit. After pairing 33 students with grant-funded, paid internships for the spring semester, Lakeland College’s Student Success and Engagement Office is setting the bar even higher for summer. Thanks to the $446,706 Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation Career Ready Internship Grant awarded to Lakeland in 2015, the college is in position to fund hundreds of new internships over a three-year period. Kim Nygard, financial accountant for Schreiber Foods, will be the keynote speaker at Lakeland College’s third SOAR professional women’s network event, which will take place Saturday, April 9 on campus. Nygard earned her bachelor’s degree from Lakeland in 2009, then added her master’s degree from the college in 2013. Ebony is a 9-year-old South African girl who Pat McDonald won’t soon forget. “Her smile, it lit up the whole world,” recalls Pat, a Lakeland College freshman from Port Washington, Wis. “Ever since I’ve left South Africa, I’ve had this strong feeling that I have to go back.
