With final exams right around the corner, Lakeland College threw one heck of a party for students on a beautiful, sun-splashed Saturday. Judging by the great attendance, big smiles and frequent laughter, the event was a huge success. Fourteen Lakeland College math mavens recently competed in the college’s sixth annual “Integration Bee,” won by Garrett Cummings. Classmate Mizuki Kato took second and Yanqi Liu was third. Thanks to a generous donation by Lakeland alumni Dr. Jolson Ng, prize money was awarded to the top three finishers. The two-hour competition, open to students with at least Calculus II under their belts, consisted of students solving the integration of calculus problems in five minutes or less. Starting in fall, 2015, Lakeland College will offer a dynamic, two-tiered media reporting platform, one that will align closely with the constantly evolving field of journalism. The new platform will consist of two one-credit practicum courses – a writing-based reporting class and a visual reporting class – that will learn separately and work together to seed a constantly updated website. “The Mirror” website will include all forms of written reporting and writing in addition to still photography and videography. National best-selling author Ishmael Beah spent two days at Lakeland College, where he engaged students, faculty and staff with his storytelling ability and charisma. The author of “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” spoke to a jam-packed Bradley Theatre audience of nearly 500 on Tuesday night, then hosted a more intimate question-and-answer session for about 30 on campus Wednesday morning. Sophomore Mikayla Schnell has a request for the entire Lakeland College community. “I would like everyone to wear blue on Wednesday, April 1, in honor of Trooper Trevor,” said the early childhood education major. Wisconsin State Trooper Trevor Casper, like Schnell a native of Kiel, Wis., was killed in the line of duty last week.
