Blowing snow made Carrye Jo Cony’s Monday commute from Sheboygan to Lakeland College a bit tricky. “But it was absolutely worth the drive,” she said enthusiastically. Cony, the volunteer coordinator for the Sheboygan Area Salvation Army, brought a big, empty van to campus. Minutes later, it was jam-packed with an estimated 300 clothing items and 50 toiletries. Karin Miofsky, Lakeland’s assistant professor of criminal justice, recently attended the Law Enforcement Explorer Conference, hosted by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Explorer Advisor Association. The event, which took place at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, featured 150 high school students from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois who are interested in majoring in criminal justice and an eventual career in law enforcement. Three Lakeland College student journalists, competing against peers from schools as large as the University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and North Dakota State University, won individual awards at last weekend’s Associated Collegiate Press Best of the Midwest College Journalism Convention in Minneapolis. There were more than 250 contest entries. States represented included Indiana, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. When Lakeland’s Pi Kappa Gammas offered a suicide awareness presentation on campus last week, sorority sister Mikayla Hilton could have sat quietly in the background. Her friends certainly would have understood.
