This course is designed for all Lakeland College majors, but it is especially designed for resort management majors and students with an interest in the Spanish language and cultures, those wishing to experience and become educated in the areas of hospitality, the Spanish language and travel and tourism in Cancun, México. Students will attend classes for one week at Lakeland College to learn about the hospitality and tourism industry with special emphasis on Cancun, México. "Survival" Spanish will be taught in conjunction with learning about the people, culture, food and beverages, norms and customs. This will include several presentations that students will research and present to prepare them for what they will experience during their travels.

The travel portion of the course will include a seven-night/eight-day trip to Cancun, México, where the students will tour local resorts, enjoy site-seeing trips to tourist attractions, visit ancient Mayan ruins and explore the early Mexican culture. Students will apply the "survival" Spanish learned, utilizing the language while interacting with the locals and other tourists in both social and formal settings. A comparison of the resort industry in an international setting to that of the United States will also be a focus. Upon returning from Cancun, the students will prepare and present a number of presentations reflecting on their experiences in Cancun, which include interviewing a native, a final summation of the language, people, culture, norms, food and beverages and a compilation of a daily log kept during their trip.

Eligibility/prerequisites:

The course and/or travel are open to any and all Lakeland College students, faculty and staff. There are no prerequisites for the course or travel.

Application deadline:

Sign-up will begin on Monday, August 30, 2012, and go through the end of the semester.

Credit/no credit information:

Three (3) elective credits are given upon successful completion of all requirements of both the course and travel components.

Cost — and what is included in the cost:

APPROXIMATE cost is $1,500 all-inclusive, meaning it includes airfare, lodging at a 4-diamond resort, transfers, food and beverages, tours, gratuities, and taxes. This cost is for one person with two persons occupying a room. Single occupancy will be slightly higher.

Other costs students should anticipate:

Incidentals, which are other costs incurred during the trip, such as souvenirs and the like, would be the responsibility of the student.
