Honors Program Requirements

The curricular design of the Honors Program is intended to facilitate the development of original ideas and to insist upon the articulate presentation of those ideas. By emphasizing creative course structures, clear communication skills in speech and in writing, and directed interaction with faculty, the program aims to develop a supportive structure that will culminate in an original project of the student's choosing. Courses in the program build upon themselves, allowing students to move from understanding the self, to understanding how creativity and originality emerge culturally and historically, to finding areas of inquiry, to developing that interest into a final product.

Honors students will initially be identified by their GPA and test scores, but may also apply during their first year of coursework at Lakeland. Potential honors students will be invited to complete a program application and participate in an interview with one of the honors committee members. Thus, the requisite criteria for entry are as follows:
