There are numerous rewards in pursuing a mathematics degree. Of course, math majors can process data, evaluate statistics, and manipulate numbers. But at its core, the study of mathematics is much more a science of puzzle-solving than of number-crunching. Mathematics exercises one's logical and analytical faculties. Ultimately, it is perhaps the world's most useful mind game.

Lakeland's mathematics major easily leads to graduate study or careers in teaching and statistical analysis, and can be combined with other major programs, such as computer science, business management, chemistry, and biochemistry.

Students who major in mathematics will be able to:

• understand and use the basic concepts of algebra, analysis, and geometry;
• develop and deploy high-level skills in problem solving, inductive reasoning, logical thought, formal mathematical definitions and proofs, and computations, including the use of computer software;
• communicate their findings effectively by formulating precise definitions, stating clear theorems, and constructing formal proofs; and
• apply mathematical ideas and tools, including computer technology, to real-world problems.
