Religion SAP

Students in the religion program regularly engage in the practices of interpreting sacred texts, critically examining and participating in religious discussion, observing and analyzing religious ritual, drawing connections between socio-historical contexts and the evolution of religious thought, exploring the similarities and differences between religious traditions, and identifying variations and key movements within a single tradition. Beyond the classroom setting, students explore how they might employ these critical skills in the context of religious service and develop additional skills of religious practice. Students sensing a call to a religious vocation are encouraged to enroll in Field Experience in Religion (REL 200). In addition, each religion major, in consultation with their advisor and other religion faculty, selects a semester-long field placement (REL 401) in their junior or senior year. Both the field experience and practicum give students hands-on experience in the practice of religious service and also help them explore their emerging sense of religious vocation. The Senior Practicum is paired with our capstone course, Religious Faith, Thought and Vocation (REL 450), which further helps students integrate their academic study of religion with their developing skills of religious practice and vocational discernment.
