José Ignacio Álvarez-García

Dr. José Ignacio Álvarez, Assistant Professor of Spanish, joined the faculty in 2008. He holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. His areas of specialization include contemporary Spanish literature, gender studies, and cultural studies. He is currently working on two articles. The first concerns the image of the bullfighter and the other deals with the representation of problematic masculinities in the context of national crisis. A native of Madrid, Álvarez is interested in traveling and is particularly intrigued by the new metropolises that are developing right now.

Katie Shumway

Ms. Elizabeth K. Shumway, Instructor of Spanish, has been teaching for Lakeland since 2002. She is a graduate of Marquette University. She has traveled and lived in Spain, Mexico, and Central and South America. During the summer, Shumway often accompanies her students abroad to live and study. She also enjoys volunteering in the community, camping, and walking her dog, Santiago. During the 2009-2010 academic year, Shumway lived and taught English at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali in Cali, Colombia.
